The size most committees pencil in before checking whether the pitches exist. They usually book too few.
Sixteen sides each playing six matches, with an hour of rest between their own games, needs far more pitches over a weekend than the arithmetic of “total matches ÷ pitches” suggests. The gap between what people book and what the schedule needs is where tournaments overrun.

48 fixtures in all. A side gets at least 60 minutes between its own matches, plays at most three a day, and no pitch hosts two games at once. These are constraints, not preferences — the scheduler will not quietly squeeze a fixture out to make the numbers work.
All 48 fixtures fit on 7 pitches over 2 days, at 46% pitch utilisation. There is not much slack: drop to 6 pitches and 6 fixtures have nowhere to go.
Most tools skip this step: they hand you a fixture list and leave you to count whether it fits in the days you have booked. Finding out it does not belongs before the invitations go out, not on the morning.

Break-even = total spend ÷ teams = £603 per team. Most organisers add 20 to 40% on top to cover withdrawals, overspend and their own time — roughly £723 to £844 here.
