How to draw a 32-team knockout bracket

32 teams in a straight knockout, where one defeat sends you home, means 5 rounds and 31 matches, or 32 with a third-place play-off. 32 is a power of two, so the bracket fills exactly and nobody sits out.

The bracket

Drawn with standard seeding: seed 1 and seed 32 sit at opposite ends, so the strongest sides meet as late as possible. After the draw or the group stage, swap the seed numbers for real club names.

How is seeding decided?

Seeding has exactly one purpose: keep the strongest teams apart for as long as possible, so you do not get the two best sides knocking each other out in round one and a weak final. The standard layout puts seed 1 and the lowest seed at opposite ends of the bracket, seed 2 in the other half, and so on, so that seeds 1 and 2 can only meet in the final.

Seeds usually come from group-stage finishing positions, for example every group winner becomes a high seed. With no group stage, use last year’s results or draw lots. In tiered formats the bracket slots are labelled by group and position, so A1 means the winner of Group A.

Common questions

Why exactly 31 matches?

Every knockout match eliminates one team. Going from 32 teams down to one winner means eliminating 31 teams, so it is always N-1 matches. The number of byes makes no difference to this.

Should we play a third-place play-off?

The two losing semi-finalists play off for third, taking the total to 32 matches. For youth tournaments it is usually worth it: one more game and one more set of medals, which both the players and the parents appreciate.

What happens if a knockout match is drawn?

Someone has to go through, so a drawn match needs a tiebreaker. Youth tournaments normally go straight to penalties rather than playing extra time, with the penalty spot moved in for younger age groups. Put this in the rules before the tournament, not on the day.

Only one or two games per team — is that enough?

This is the real weakness of a pure knockout: 16 of the 32 teams go home after a single match. Youth tournaments more often run a group stage followed by tiered knockouts, where the groups settle the seeding and teams then drop into Cup, Plate or Shield brackets. Everyone gets a similar number of games and every side still has a trophy to play for.

Need kick-off times and pitch numbers, not just the bracket?

The bracket answers who plays whom. Add your pitches, days and opening hours and get a full handbook in about ten seconds: every match with a time and a pitch, clashes and back-to-back games avoided automatically, and group stages plus tiered knockouts drawn for you. Free, no sign-up.
